The IRS recently released IR-2024-278 encouraging taxpayers to sign up for an Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN).

How does an IP PIN work?

Just like using a PIN for your debit card, your IP PIN is like a password for filing your tax return. New IP PINs are issued and will be mailed each new calendar year. Please provide the current year's IP PIN with your tax documents.

Are they required?

As of now, IP PINs are not required. However, if you are concerned about identity theft, it's an easy way to be sure no one is filing a tax return using your personal information.

How do I get an IP PIN?

You can sign up for an IP PIN using an IRS Online Account.

Is there a deadline for signing up?

You may sign up for an IP PIN at anytime. If you want to be sure it's in place for the Tax Year 2024 filing season, it is best to apply before the IP PIN system goes down for maintenance on November 23, 2024; it won't be back online until early January 2025.
